Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We support ethical collecting and some years ago there were some laws put into place making it illegal to sell your beach finds, even if it's put into jewellery. Along with that rule, there is a limit to how much you can collect in a year along the beaches: 1 gallon per day and up to 3 gallons per year.
For further info reach out to Oregon State Parks and Recreation Dept as they are happy to assist you!
Beyond that, they are great for all kinds of crafts and jewellery!
We are so happy for you that you found that great treasure! However, much like the collection rules along the beach, we are not allowed to buy, nor you sell, materials collected on public lands unless you have a permit. If it comes from private claims or private property that is a different matter!
Also keep in mind that some locations are being greatly restricted for collecting now due to poor collection habits from some. Most BLM and Public land in Oregon is limited to 25lbs a day and 250lbs a year, plus one specimen piece in which you need a permit for.
We get this question often and before reaching out for us to give our best attempt at identifying try and list the area where it was collected and any other local type of info you may have. Remember, agates jaspers and other common minerals do come in all kinds of colors, textures and can often be found together even in the same rock! Look at the surrounding areas. For example, if you are at the beach and find what appears to be obsidian, most likely it was dropped there by someone else. So if you come and ask if it is "Glass Butte Obsidian" that one could be hard to say for sure. However, if you say you were east of Bend on a particular hill.... and want to know if it's Glass Butte material, then we at least have a starting point!
